Indiviual Assignment #1
December 14, 2011

I read Thomas' entries and the site it was entered on. I was very pleased with the ease of navigation through the different pages which encompassed the book but also impressed with Thomas' descriptions and summaries of his entries.

Group Assignment #1
Suspense- The excitement felt at the approach of the climax in the story.
Foreshadowing- To show or indicate before the event.
Four examples of Suspense are "I'm talking to you young man. The day of judgement is very close at hand."(pg.15), "The sea ..So peacful to-day-sometimes so cruel.....The sea that dragged you down to its depths. Drowned ...Found drowned ....Drowned at sea....Drowned -Drowned-Drowned....No, she wouldn't remember ...She would not think of it! All that was over....(pg.32),"Queer light eyes that shifted the whole time from place to place. Vera thought: 'She looks frightened of her own shadow!' 'Yes, that was it- frightened! She looked like a woman who walked in mortal fear...A little shiver passed down Vera's back. What on earth was the woman afraid of?"(pg.29)" In her bedroom, Emily Brent, dressed in black silk ready for dinner, was reading her Bible. Her lips moved as she followed the words: "The hearthen are sunk down in the pit that they made: in the net which they hid is their own foot taken. The Lord is known by the judgment which he executeth: the wicked is snared in the work of his own hands. The wicked shall be turned into hell." Her tight lips closed. She shut the Bible.
Four examples of Foreshadowing are "'There's a squall coming.'Mr. Blore said:'No, no mate, it's a lovely day.' The old man said angirly: 'There's a squall ahead. I can smell it.'"(pg.15), "I'm talking to you young man. The day of judgement is very close at hand."(pg.15),The Ten Little Indain poem on pge 31.
We chose these examples because we decided that they had great clues to what will happen next in the story. Maybe they will instead lead to a red herring. The two warnings that Mr. Blore got before getting off the train but the man brough much suspense and foreshadowing. It makes the reader think about when the storm is coming and when is Judgement day? It was suspensful to hear about the flashbacks Vera gets about seeing her friend drowned. We picked it because it might lead to something significent later on in the story. We picked the Bible passage Emily was reading because it makes us wonder if that passage has any significance in the story. Our group thinks that there is a lot of foreshadowing in the Indian poem. We think that the Indian poem describes the ways that the ten people will be murdered. These are reasons that we chose these passages. Thomas - These are really great answers with good support for your choices of quotes. Your links are not set up correctly. This assignment should be on your ATTWN page which should then be linked to the reading page. Please fix that. Mrs. M 12/7/12
